Jefferson Hills police officer Anthony Perella has turned in his badge and gun after a 25-year career with the borough force.

A former Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, officer, Perella was hired by Jefferson Hills in February 1998.

He worked for Sewickley Police prior to coming to Jefferson Hills.

His last day of service was Feb. 20.

Perella was recognized at a borough council meeting March 14.

Police Chief Ronald Dziezgowski Jr. said Perella was a hard-working and dedicated patrolman.

“Officer Perella was born and raised in the city of Pittsburgh, and he was dedicated to his profession and was a second-generation police officer following in his father’s, who was a state trooper, footsteps,” Dziezgowski said.

Mayor Carrie McCaffrey presented Perella with a framed American flag and the chief gave him a plaque.

“It’s been great to represent Jefferson Hills and to work here,” Perella said told meeting attendees. “It’s been an honor. Thank you.”

Council and other borough officials gave Perella a standing ovation after his remarks.

“May he have a happy (and) long retirement,” council vice president Hilary Budd said.

Other council members also lauded Perella on his retirement, as well as Officer Jacob Moldovan for completing his probationary period and becoming a full-time officer.

“It’s not always that when you have a retirement you have good health, a good pension and a time to enjoy yourself,” councilwoman Karen Bucy said. “I’m sure he has all three of those things, and I wish him the best.”

The department first announced his upcoming retirement via Facebook November 2021.

Jefferson Hills has 21 officers, all full-time.
