A Pittsburgh man said he blacked out on the way home from a South Hills bar before he crashed into a family’s home in Baldwin, according to the charges against him.

Michael Deery, 53, faces two counts of driving under the influence and a half-dozen summary citations in connection with the Jan. 16 crash along Churchview Avenue.

Police said they responded to the crash around 2 a.m. Officers said Deery drove out of the yard and tried to take off, but was stopped and ordered out of the car a few houses down the street.

Deery told police that he left the Backdraft bar and then blacked out, according to the complaint. Officers said beer cans were “scattered through the back passenger compartment.”

Police said the impact of the crash collapsed the home’s stairwell and the residents had to be rescued from the upper level of the home.

Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV reported that two adults and their foster son were asleep upstairs when the crash happened.

“It makes me mad to think like he left, and we could have been hurt,” resident Maria Neumeyer told the TV station. “Like, my son, maybe he couldn’t sleep or I had him downstairs or something like that.”

The residents have been unable to return to the damaged house.

“Your actions when you chose to get behind the wheel when you’re drinking and what you did, you affected everybody,” Neumeyer told WPXI.
