Students arrive for the first day of in-person classes at West Jefferson Hills School District’s Jefferson Hills Intermediate School on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020.

Fewer students than usual entered West Jefferson Hills School District’s Jefferson Hills Intermediate School on the first day of in-person school, Aug. 31. Due to the pandemic, the actual first day of school for the district was Aug. 24, but all classes were held online for the first week.

Those opting to do the hybrid learning model were split into two groups, with Team Dignity attending in person on Mondays and Thursdays and Team Respect attending in person on Tuesdays and Fridays. Other students have opted for either the fully online canvas or the WHJSD Cyber Academy.

“Despite the many changes that have taken place this school year, the magic of the first day is ever-present at JHIS,” said JHIS principal Chris Very. “Greeting the students as they entered JHIS this morning made all of the hard work well worth it.”

According to the district, Superintendent Dr. Michael Ghilani will reassess the current covid situation the week of Sept. 21 and hopes to have these students back in the classrooms five days a week by the end of September if the situation permits.
