Thomas Jefferson High School graduates 229

Thomas Jefferson High School’s class of 2022 received their diplomas on June 1, concluding a four-year journey unlike any other since the first TJ class graduated in 1960.

A total of 229 Jaguar seniors graduated at TJ Stadium before a large, enthusiastic crowd in a ceremony that began an hour earlier than scheduled, successfully avoiding the thunderstorms that arrived less than two hours after graduation ended.

The TJ seniors are the last class that attended the old Thomas Jefferson High School. The 63rd TJ class transitioned to the new TJHS in August 2019 as sophomores. Seven months later, the world was turned upside down when the covid-19 pandemic closed schools and brought about nearly two years of remote learning, followed by in-person school while masked.

“This group of seniors is unlike any other class in TJ history,” principal Pete Murphy said at the ceremony. “I hope they will take some time soon to reflect on the grit, determination and resiliency it took to reach this milestone.”

Three seniors were selected to speak on behalf of their classmates. Class president Ben Rubinoff was selected by his peers, Isabella Bertini was chosen by the TJ faculty for the remarks she submitted and Anthony Sparta was selected by the faculty among the seniors who’ve earned Highest Honors (4.0 GPA or higher).

A total of 58 seniors earned Highest Honors. All TJ seniors had the opportunity to submit remarks for consideration.

The TJ Choir sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” and the TJ Marching Band played “One Moment in Time” during the ceremony. Senior members of the band and choir joined their peers for the performances.

Six TJ graduates will begin military service by this fall: Jordan Chiprich, Army National Guard; Mya Greschner, U.S. Naval Academy; Aastha Lamsal, U.S. Air Force; Thandar Lin, U.S. Air Force Academy; Andrew McClelland, U.S. Navy; and Mary Pysh, Army National Guard.

The TJ Class of 2022 officers were: president Ben Rubinoff, vice president Ella Radakovich, secretary Riley Patrick, treasurer Emma Stock and Sarah Petrovich, public relations.
