A luxury penthouse boasting a dramatic glass catwalk that gives a nod to Pittsburgh’s reputation as a “City of Bridges” is on the market for $1.1 million in the Strip District.

The North Penthouse is the largest unit in Springfield Lofts. Listing agent Austin Kyle Rusert of Coldwell Banker Realty calls it the most dramatically designed piece of real estate in Pittsburgh.

“You walk in and see this really unique catwalk. Modern and sleek. It’s the focal point of the unit,” Rusert said. “There’s really nothing like it in the city.”

The modern penthouse occupies what was once a school gymnasium.

“We’ve had all kinds of different people look at this. Some people are looking for a second home or people who want walkability. A lot of the draw has been the Strip District,” Rusert said. “We’re right between Lawrenceville and the heart of the Strip.”

Springfield Lofts is housed in the former Springfield Elementary School, constructed in 1871, and after that, the building served as office space for Crucible Steel.

Soaring ceilings (22 feet) and original 10-foot window frames make for an immediate wow factor.

The refinished tongue-and-groove maple floors are original and date to 1871, when the stately brick building was built as Springfield Elementary School (it closed in 1934).

“They kept the character of the floors and they have a little bit more distressed look, but you can sometimes see where the desks used to be,” Rusert said.

The oversized primary suite features two oversized closets.

Springfield Lofts has 14 units total, each designed with a different layout.

Only three units remain on the market.

Rusert lives in the Strip District and has sold luxury real estate for seven years.

“You can see down Smallman Street from here,” Rusert noted. “They kept the original window frames, so they had to renovate around that.”

The HOA fee for North Penthouse is more than $800 per month, as it is based on square footage, Rusert said.

Those fees cover window washing, maintenance, outside maintenance, water, sewage and trash utilities and building insurance.

North Penthouse has 2,500 square feet of open-living space that includes a two-story great room, open kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a loft/office.

“This part of the Strip is developing a ton right now,” Rusert said. “The Strip is slowly merging with Lawrenceville.”

Another penthouse perk is that the sale price includes two deeded and covered parking spots on the property.
