The motorcycles of the VFW Riders rumbled at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and 10th Street in Pittsburgh, waiting to get the Pittsburgh Veterans Day Parade underway.

With a wave of the hand from the parade marshal, they headed down Liberty Avenue on Saturday to a huge American flag suspended above the Fifth Avenue intersection.

Spectators lined the avenue waving handheld American flags and shouting their appreciation to the military veterans who marched in the parade.

“Welcome home boys,” boomed a man’s voice as rows of people wearing uniforms representing Vietnam Veterans Inc. marched by.

“Thank you for your service,” another voice yelled.

Veterans from different eras were joined in the parade by military vehicles, members of local support organizations and other agencies. They were followed by the drum beat and trumpets of local high school marching bands.

The Plum Senior High School marching band played several songs near the end of the parade, including the national anthem and “God Bless America.”
