Tornado warning issued for Westmoreland County

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a tornado warning for northern and central Westmoreland County, including Vandergrift, Orchard Hills and Apollo, until 8:30 p.m.

Pea-sized hail is possible.

The entire Southwestern Pennsylvania region is under severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m.

The warning stretches from eastern Ohio and includes most of western Pennsylvania as well as parts of Maryland and West Virginia.

Scattered wind gusts up to 70 m.p.h. are possible, along with penny-sized hail and tornadoes.

Criteria for a severe thunderstorm includes winds of at least 58 m.p.h. or wind damage, like fallen trees or branches, and quarter-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service.
