• TV Talk: Energetic, joyful Oscars telecast crowns ‘Oppenheimer’ best picture
The biggest surprise was the numerous awards (costumes, makeup, production design) for “Poor Things,” an arthouse movie that bested expected winners “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in multiple categories. Those wins foreshadowed “Poor Things” star Emma Stone winning over presumptive favorite Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).
The Oscars followed in the footsteps of January’s Emmys and February’s Screen Actors Guild Awards by reuniting casts, a welcome, crowd-pleasing awards show trend.
AP• Russell Wilson – a look at new Steelers QB
Soon-to-be free agent quarterback Russell Wilson has indicated on social media that he plans to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers once the NFL calendar year begins on Wednesday.
On Wilson’s X account, formerly known as Twitter, he posted a 50-second video late Sunday night that showed Steelers highlights to the Styx song “Renegade,” the team’s long-time unofficial anthem.
• Norwin girls wrestlers relish special moments during PIAA’s inaugural season
“Girls wrestling is a great add-on to the community. I see a lot of support from the parents. I see a lot of support from girls in general and how inspiring it is to the younger generation, especially our middle school girls coming up to the high school,” said Nick Semon, one of Norwin’s coaches.
AP• Bass Pro Shops plans to open Pittsburgh-area store in early 2026
The South Fayette store will offer a selection of hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation gear tailored to the region. Bass Pro Shops combine retail with entertainment, outdoor education and conservation.
It will be the company’s third store in the state. There is a Bass Pro Shops in Harrisburg and a Cabela’s in Hamburg. Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela’s in 2017.
AP• Erie prepares for crush of solar eclipse enthusiasts
At Serafin’s Food Market, owner Dan Serafin compared his situation to one that’s familiar for Erie residents.
“We’re kind of treating it like a big snowstorm is coming,” he said. “We’re expecting a big three- or four-day run on groceries. But if there’s as much traffic as they’re talking about, we may see the locals stocking up on stuff rather than tourists.”
TribLive• Guard punched inmate in Allegheny County Jail cell, police say
Robert Veith, 49, of Plum, was conducting window cell checks Jan. 3 when the incident occurred, Allegheny County Police spokesman Jim Madalinsky said.
Surveillance video showed Veith talking with an incarcerated man, who police did not name. During their conversation, Veith reached out and struck the man with his fist multiple times, Madalinsky said.
