TribLive wins 7 Golden Quill awards

TribLive won seven Golden Quill Awards at the 62nd awards ceremony Monday night, held at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

An additional 14 submissions were recognized as finalists.

The Golden Quills competition, organized by The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, recognizes professional and student work in print, broadcast, photography, videography and digital journalism throughout Western Pennsylvania and nearby counties in Ohio and West Virginia.

“I’m grateful to work with such a dedicated newsroom,” Executive Editor Luis Fabregas said. “The TribLive staff approaches its work with professionalism and persistence, and it’s rewarding to see that effort recognized.”

TribLive won awards in the following categories Monday:

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Spot/Breaking News – Division 1: “ ‘I heard some kind of crack’: Woman admits in police interrogation video to killing best friend’s baby,” Paula Reed Ward

• Excellence in Visual Achievement, Page Design – Print: “Investment plan,” Jeff Vella

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Profile – Division 1: “Deputy Mayor Jake Pawlak quietly steers Pittsburgh through high-stakes decisions,” Julia Burdelski

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Medical/Health – Division 1: “Older, disabled Pennsylvanians bear brunt of home care staffing crisis,” Jack Troy

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Sports – Division 1: “ ‘I want to win’: Paul Skenes sets bar high, aims to raise ceiling for Pirates,” Kevin Gorman

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Editorials – Division 1: “Child welfare and social responsibility,” collected editorials by Lori Falce

• Excellence in Written Journalism, Columns/Blogs – Division 1: “Inheritance, memory and responsibility,” collected columns by Lori Falce

The Press Club on Monday also recognized Michelle Wright, who recently retired from WTAE, with the President’s Award.

The Women’s Press Club of Pittsburgh was honored with the Service to Journalism Award.
