Troy Hill man accused of stabbing man in face arrested after SWAT standoff
Police arrested a man accused of stabbing another man in the face during a street fight Tuesday afternoon in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood.
Edward Terle, 32, of Troy Hill was detained and charged with aggravated assault after a nearly 45-minute SWAT standoff.
Authorities received a report at about 1:15 p.m. of a fight happening outside along Province Street between Goettman and Brabec streets, Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesman Chris Togneri said.
Pittsburgh officers arrived to find a male with a stab wound to his face, Togneri said. Medics rushed him to a nearby hospital. His condition and identity were not available.
The stabbing victim told police that his attacker had gone into a nearby house at the corner where Province Street meets Brabec Street.
When officers knocked on the door, the suspect’s father initially challenged them to come inside and get his son, police said.
After SWAT officers made a series of verbal commands for everyone to exit the home, both Terle and his father came outside and surrendered to police, Togneri said.
Both men were detained briefly before the father was released and Terle was taken into custody shortly before 2 p.m.
It’s unclear whether the initial fight involved anyone else. Police continue to investigate.
“There was a report of a fight in the street. When (police officers) got here, they found one male victim who had been stabbed in the face and another man armed who had barricaded himself inside the home,” Togneri said.
“How many people were involved is part of the investigation.”
During the SWAT standoff, officers closed Troy Hill Road and Province and Goettman streets, temporarily limiting driving access to the city.
All roads were reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
