Two roller coasters have come to a halt at Kennywood, at least temporarily.

The Thunderbolt and Steel Curtain are closed for maintenance, the West Mifflin park confirmed on Wednesday.

“We appreciate our guests’ patience as we work closely with the ride’s manufacturer to reopen Steel Curtain as soon as possible,” said general manager Mark Pauls in a statement. “We are just as disappointed as our guests are for it to not be available.”

Pauls said the Steel Curtain requires additional maintenance to best ensure guest and team member safety.

He added the carpenters and maintenance staff are working hard to open the Thunderbolt in time for the Fourth of July holiday this weekend. The park is planning extended hours staying open until 11 p.m. Friday through Monday, extra entertainment and new food offerings this weekend as well as fireworks.

“We will keep guests updated as soon as each ride is able to open,” Pauls said.

The park hosted the American Coaster Enthusiasts, the world’s largest amusement ride enthusiast club, this past weekend.

The Thunderbolt, originally The Pippin, debuted in 1924. It was named the Thunderbolt in 1968 after it was remodeled. The Steel Curtain made its first run in July 2019.
