Unmanned vehicle drifts, striking Ross woman

A Ross woman was hospitalized after suffering injuries from an unmanned car drifting into her.

A driver got out of her car, believing she had put it in park, police said.

However, she forgot to apply the break and her vehicle began drifting backwards along Wellesley Avenue in Ross.

A pedestrian along the street was doing yard work outside of her house when the car began rolling.

The vehicle’s operator tried to stop the car from continuing to move by grabbing the car’s open driver-side door. The woman was unable to stop it and got caught under the door as the car continued to drift, said Brian Kohlhepp, deputy chief of Ross Township Police Department.

The car then drifted into the woman who was operating a leaf blower, before coming to rest against a tree in her yard, officials said.

Officers did not know how far the car rolled before hitting the woman.

The woman working on her yard was transported to Allegheny General Hospital.

On Thursday evening she was in stable condition, officers said.

The driver also went to Allegheny General Hospital for superficial injuries resulting from the car’s door.
