Upcoming offerings at Northern Tier Library
NORTHERN TIER LIBRARY
Northland Tier Library is located at 4015 Dickey Road in Richland. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and closed Sundays. The library can be reached at 724-449-2665 or northerntierlibrary.org. Here are some upcoming programs:
• Maker Monday Take-Home Kit: All day Aug. 25 and Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29
Tweens and teens 11-18 can stop by during regular library hours and pick up a take-home kit. Call the library to reserve one. The Aug. 25 kit is snake knitting; recycled materials and craft sticks will be used to create a small knitting loom. Mark your calendars: Sept. 8 will be magnet art; Sept. 22 will be woven mandala pins; and Sept. 29 will be weaving.
• The Weekly Craft: Every Tuesday, Aug. 26 through Sept. 30
Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy a simple, weekly take-home craft. Registration is required to account for supplies and ensure pickup in the lobby on Tuesdays. When you register, you can designate which library branch you’d like to pick up the kit.
• Plant-based Pittsburgh North: 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Aug. 27
oin us for a fun food sampling and recipe exchange. Share your favorite plant-based dish, discover new ones and connect with others who share your passion for plant-powered meals. Bring your ready-to-eat dish along with the recipe to share and a $5 requested donation with proceeds benefiting the library. Plates and utensils will be provided; a microwave, as well as electric outlets, will be available for warming. Registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Sept. 24 session will involve a whole-food plant-based cooking demo by Heidi and Rick Z.
• Humphrey Bogart Classic Movies: 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 2
The Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club will show “Key Largo,” starring Humphrey Bogart as a drifter who visits the family hotel of a war buddy who was killed in action only to find that a Chicago mobster and his gang have taken over the place. The club’s mission is to preserve and promote classic films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, 1910-1969, in the community. To that end, it offers free movie screenings throughout the Pittsburgh area. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 7. The movie is free, and refreshments will be provided. Registration is required to account for supplies.
• Natureology — Whales: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9
Bigger than dinosaurs, whales are not fish. They’re mammals, and they’ve got the hair and belly buttons to prove it. Even stranger, they once were the size of dogs and walked on land. Join Tony Palermo to learn more about whales. This program is for children of all ages. Registration is required.
• Maker Monday in Person: 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15
Tweens and teens 11-18 can stop by and make a flashlight using a mini LED light, battery and craft materials.
• “Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks”: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29
Pittsburgh has an incredible baseball history with great players, teams and historic moments, but few realize that the city often has been in the lead in ballpark design and development. Join Mark Fatla, a lifelong baseball fan and author of “Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks” (Arcadia Press, 2023), as he chronicles the nine ballparks that hosted major league baseball in Pittsburgh between 1876 and the present, including the Negro Leagues. The talk is open to all ages. Registration is required.
PINE CENTER
This satellite branch of Northland Tier Library is located in the Pine Community Center at 100 Pine Park Drive in Pine. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; and closed Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Here are some upcoming programs:
• Family Storytime: 11 to 11:45 a.m. every Friday
This all-ages storytime involves singing, moving, reading and practicing rhymes. A one-time registration is required for the series, but you do not have to attend every session.
• The Pine Needles: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4
All teen through adult yarn art enthusiasts, both beginners and experienced crafters, can join us at the Pine Center on the first Thursday of every month. Beginners can learn how to knit. Experienced crafters are welcome to bring a project to work on. We’ll talk about life, books we’ve read and projects we’re always working on but may never finish. Registration is requested.
• A Very Pine Birthday Party: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20
The Pine Center is marking one year. Celebrate the milestone throughout the month of September with activities and a giving tree for presents that can be purchased to help show your support for the library. Stop by for a birthday party at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 birthday party. There will be cupcakes, snacks, fun activities and more.
• Winter Birding Prep: 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 23
Bring some joy to your backyard this winter by welcoming birds. Learn about the region’s backyard birds, how to welcome them, and which birding gear is right for you from Latodami Nature Center. Registration is required.
