Northland Tier Library is located at 4015 Dickey Road in Richland. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and closed Sundays. The library can be reached at 724-449-2665 or northerntierlibrary.org.

Donations in September have extra impact

September is Love Your Library Month.

Once again, the Jack Buncher Foundation is matching all donations made during the month on a prorated basis.

Upcoming programs

Maker Monday Take-Home Kit: All day Sept. 22 and 29

Tweens and teens 11-18 can stop by during regular library hours and pick up a take-home kit. Call the library to reserve one. The Sept. 22 kit will be woven mandala pins; Sept. 29 will be weaving.

Winter Birding Prep: 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 23

Bring some joy to your backyard this winter by welcoming birds. Learn about the region’s backyard birds, how to welcome them, and which birding gear is right for you from Latodami Nature Center. Registration is required.

“Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks”: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29

Pittsburgh has an incredible baseball history with great players, teams and historic moments, but few realize that the city often has been in the lead in ballpark design and development. Join Mark Fatla, a lifelong baseball fan and author of “Pittsburgh’s Historic Ballparks” (Arcadia Press, 2023), as he chronicles the nine ballparks that hosted major league baseball in Pittsburgh between 1876 and the present, including the Negro Leagues. The talk is open to all ages. Registration is required.

The Weekly Craft: Tuesdays through Sept. 30

Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy a simple, weekly take-home craft. Registration is required to account for supplies and ensure pickup in the lobby on Tuesdays. When you register, you can designate which library branch you’d like to pick up the kit.

Saving Money for Expenses, Goals, and Emergencies: 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30

Learn how to save money for your goals, large purchases and unexpected expenses with this presentation by Huntington Bank. Registration is required.

Cooking With Chef Carol: 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7 and Nov. 11

Join Chef Carol Nardello for a new cooking demonstrations for fall. Classes are $45 each and limited to 30 participants. Registration early is advised. Oct. 7 will feature Chinese Restaurant Favorites; on the menu is egg drop soup, copycat Mongolian beef and broccoli, steamed rice, celery sesame salad and Chinese five spice cake. Nov. 11 will feature Tucci Family Favorites; on the menu is Stanley Tucci’s Mother’s Chicken Cacciatore, polenta, broccoli piccata and Italian cream sheet cake.

• Natureology — Bump in the Night: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14

While you’re sleeping, a different cast of characters are making a living under the night sky: owls, fireflies, bats, possums, raccoons and cats. Join Tony Palermo to learn more about why these animals prefer the moon. This program is for children of all ages. Registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Nov. 11 session will explore birds; Dec. 9 will look at bugs.

This satellite branch of Northland Tier Library is located in the Pine Community Center at 100 Pine Park Drive in Pine. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; and closed Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Upcoming programs

• Family Storytime: 11 to 11:45 a.m. Oct. 3

This all-ages storytime involves singing, moving, reading and practicing rhymes. A one-time registration is required for the series, but you do not have to attend every session.

• The Pine Needles: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4

All teen through adult yarn art enthusiasts, both beginners and experienced crafters, can join us at the Pine Center on the first Thursday of every month. Beginners can learn how to knit. Experienced crafters are welcome to bring a project to work on. We’ll talk about life, books we’ve read and projects we’re always working on but may never finish. Registration is requested.
