Firefighters respond to a fire Monday afternoon on a boat in the Allegheny River in Harmar.

One person was hospitalized after a boat caught fire Monday afternoon in the Allegheny River near Harmar.

Police, firefighters and first responders were dispatched about 3 p.m. following reports of the fire, emergency services spokesman Kasey Reigner told TribLive.

The boat caught fire on the water near the Allegheny River Turnpike Bridge, which carries Interstate 76, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, from Harmar Township’s Harmarville neighborhood across the Allegheny River and into Plum.

One person, who authorities have not named, was taken to an area hospital Monday, Reigner said. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The boat appeared to be destroyed. Crews remained at the scene at 5:30 p.m., Harmar police said.

The state Fish and Boat Commission is helping lead the investigation. The commission did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
