A Gilpin woman riding an e-bike was airlifted to a hospital after being hit by a car in the township Tuesday.

Armstrong County 911 said emergency services reported to the 600 block of Route 66 just after 3 p.m. after receiving reports of an accident involving a vehicle and an e-bike.

Southern Armstrong Police Chief Chris Fabec said the woman was traveling northbound when a driver backing his vehicle out of a driveway onto Route 66 hit her.

Fabec said the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with authorities. The man told police he looked both ways and before backing out of the driveway at a low-rate of speed and did not see the cyclist.

The driver told police after the car was in motion he noticed the cyclist attempting to avoid him by riding onto Route 66, but by then it was too late to avoid a collision.

Fabec said the cyclist was not wearing a helmet and sustained a head injury.

The chief said her condition was not available Wednesday evening. He said there were no updates regarding the ongoing investigation.

The section of road was closed for less than an hour and was reopened around 3:40 p.m., Armstrong 911 said.
