3 injured in Route 380 crash in Washington Township; 2 rescued from smashed vehicle
Three people were injured Tuesday night in a two-vehicle crash that uprooted the center guardrail on Route 380 in Washington Township and snarled traffic on a stretch of the highway for more than an hour.
None of the injuries appeared life-threatening, but all three victims were flown by medical helicopters to Pittsburgh hospitals, officials said.
Emergency dispatchers received a report of the crash at about 7:30 p.m. on Route 380 at Camp Nancy Road, a Westmoreland County 911 shift commander said.
Firefighters arrived to find one car resting on its side atop the smashed guardrail, with two people trapped inside, Washington Township Fire Chief Clayton Murphy said.
“We had to stabilize the vehicle on the guard rail, remove the roof to access the two patients and remove them from there,” Murphy said.
A third injured person was able to get out of the other vehicle involved in crash, an SUV, before medics arrived.
All three were conscious when medics loaded them into three helicopters, Murphy said.
The extent of their injuries was not available.
It’s unclear what caused the crash.
Route 380 reopened to traffic in both directions once the wreckage was cleared about 8:45 p.m.
PennDOT officials assisted in the cleanup and securing damaged road signs and other debris.
Murphy urged drivers in the area to slow down and be patient.
“There’s a fair amount here at this intersection because Camp Nancy Road is the back entrance to the Westmoreland industrial park, so there’s a lot of traffic,” Murphy said.
Washington Township police are investigating the crash.
