Someone shot a man in the leg late Thursday morning in New Kensington, according to city police.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Leishman Avenue around 11:30 a.m., according to Detective Sgt. Matt Saxman.

Witnesses said a gunman fired multiple shots and struck the victim at least once in the upper leg, Saxman said. He was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, according to the detective.

Police cordoned of a section of Leishman between Catalpa and North streets following the shooting. Yellow evidence markers led from Leishman Avenue into an alley, part of which remained taped off until about 1:30 p.m.

Leishman resident D.J. Eller Jr. said he saw a man running along Leishman toward Catalpa Street when he heard two bursts of gunfire.

“Some of (the bullets) went through branches of that tree on the corner and whizzed over my head,” Eller said.

The wounded man fell on Eller’s front steps, where medics cared for him. After the man was taken away in an ambulance, a pair of medical forceps and a splotch of blood remained on the steps.

Eller said he recognized the shooting victim as being from New Kensington. Police did not identify the victim or say what might have led to shooting, nor did they provide a description of the suspect.

No one had been arrested in connection with the shooting as of Thursday afternoon.

The investigation continues.
