Two occupants of a van were taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital Wednesday morning after a train clipped the vehicle at the Blockdale Street crossing off Pittsburgh Street in Cheswick.
The incident happened just before 7:30 a.m. The Norfolk Southern crossing remained closed late Wednesday morning as authorities investigated.
Allegheny Valley Regional Police Chief Mike Naviglia said the van’s driver and a passenger were taken to the Pittsburgh hospital to be evaluated, but they did not appear to be seriously injured. Both were standing outside of the upended van when first responders arrived, he said.
There is no crossing gate at the Blockdale Street crossing. The van’s driver and passenger told police they did not hear the train horn, Naviglia said.
Calls to Norfolk Southern were not immediately returned.
It appears the train clipped the front of the van, spinning the vehicle into a jersey barrier, Naviglia said.
The incident is being investigated.
