Springdale police charged two men on Thursday after allegedly finding a stolen gun and drugs in their vehicle during a traffic stop.

Dominique William Kent, 19, and Aiden Ulrich, 18, both of New Kensington, were charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and carrying a firearm without a license.

The pair were released from custody after they each posted a $10,000 cash bail following their arraignment. They face preliminary hearings on the charges before District Judge David J. Sosovicka on Nov. 8.

Officer Jon Koprivkar was patrolling on Oct. 28 when he stopped a Jeep along Pittsburgh Street with a burned-out rear brake light and an expired registration, according to a criminal complaint filed to support the charges.

The officer said he smelled a strong odor of burned marijuana but Ulrich, Kent and an unnamed rear passenger denied smoking or having drugs in the vehicle.

Kent, who was driving the Jeep, admitted to smoking marijuana and having it in the vehicle when Koprivkar asked him if he was willing to submit to a field sobriety check, according to the complaint.

Kent then agreed to let police search the vehicle, where they found a Smith & Wesson .380-caliber handgun in the center console that was reported stolen out of West Deer, the complaint said.

Two plastic bags containing containing suspected marijuana as well as a scale and drug paraphernalia were also confiscated from the vehicle, according to investigators.

In addition to the gun and theft charges, both men were charged with possession of a firearm by a minor. Kent also was charged with driving under the influence and several traffic violations.

Ulrich received an additional charge of false identification to law enforcement because police said he gave Koprivikar a fake name when he was asked to show identification.
