Two women in their 60s died after a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Route 66 in Washington Township.

The nearly head-on crash of two SUVs happened about 1 p.m. near Paradise Drive, township Police Sgt. Vincent Surace said.

There were witnesses to the crash, he said.

According to Surace, Janice Ciorra, 67, of Washington Township was traveling north on Route 66 when she veered into the southbound lane and into the path of Cynthia Ament, 63, of Elizabeth.

Ament died at the scene, Surace said.

Ciorra was flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, where she died from her injuries, he said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, Surace said.

Route 66 was closed until about 5:15 p.m. between Paradise Drive and Turack Road.

Washington Township police were continuing to investigate the crash with the help of state police.
