A car traverses the Saltsburg Road bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plum Friday.

Drivers will have to contend with lengthy detours while a section of Saltsburg Road in Plum is closed for 27 days starting Saturday.

While the posted detour for passenger vehicles is about 11 miles, the one for commercial truck traffic is more than twice as long.

Saltsburg Road (Route 380) will be closed between Monroeville-Trestle and Davidson roads while the road is connected with a new bridge carrying Saltsburg over the Pennsylvania Turnpike at milepost 53.6, the turnpike commission announced Friday.

Access to local businesses will be maintained, and residential property owners also will be able to access the area, the commission said.

About 7,900 vehicles travel that part of Saltsburg Road each day, according to PennDOT.

The 11.1-mile posted detour for passenger vehicles:

Eastbound: Saltsburg Road (1.5 miles) to New Texas Road (2.5 miles) to Leechburg Road (3.7 miles), back onto Saltsburg Road (3.4 miles).

Westbound: Saltsburg Road (3.4 miles) to Leechburg Road (3.7 miles) to New Texas Road (2.5 miles), back onto Saltsburg Road (1.5 miles).

The 25.8-mile detour for commercial truck traffic:

Eastbound: Saltsburg Road (4 miles) to Frankstown Road (1.5 miles) to Rodi Road (1.9 miles) to Route 22 west (6.5 miles) to Golden Mile Highway (7.9 miles) back onto Saltsburg Road (4 miles).

Westbound: Saltsburg Road (4 miles) to Golden Mile Highway (7.9 miles) to Route 22 (6.5 miles) to Rodi Road (1.9 miles) to Frankstown Road (1.5 miles) back onto Saltsburg Road (4 miles).

In addition to the detours, the intersection at Davidson Road will be closed with traffic detoured to Universal Road, to Lott Road and to Old Frankstown Road.

The work is scheduled to be finished Aug. 13, the turnpike commission said.
