TGIF!
It’s the kickoff to Labor Day weekend, the last official hurrah of summer.
Though it’s usually a time to pack in a picnic, backyard barbecue, road trip or other outdoor fun, that’s not all there is to do around these parts.
SHEL game
Indie-folk band SHEL will wrap up this year’s SummerSounds free concert series, taking the stage at 7 p.m. Friday in downtown Greensburg’s St. Clair Park.
Hailing from Colorado, the quartet comprises the four Holbrook sisters — Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza, and hence the band’s name. Their sound features classically inspired mandolin, violin and piano and seemingly effortless harmonizing (enhanced no doubt by their shared DNA).
Get to the park early to take in local opening act Jake Polcha.

Sounds like Sir Paul
The McCartney Project will cover all phases of the “cute” Beatle’s career beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Greensburg’s Palace Theatre.
From “Please Please Me” to “Band on the Run,” the tribute group will play a high-energy show of hits from the legendary singer-songwriter’s stints with the Fab Four and Wings and as a solo act.
Paul McCartney look-alike front man Tony Burlingame plays a mean left-handed bass, too.

Arts, crafts and more
Where to start at the 26th annual Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts Labor Day Festival? It might be hard to decide, with more than 200 exhibitor booths expected to set up Friday through Monday at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds.
It should be one-stop shopping for fall floral arrangements, scented candles and decor, along with jewelry, ceramics, functional and decorative furniture, photos, embellished clothing, edible treats and much, much more.
Finished shopping? Take in some food and entertainment, and don’t forget to let the kids enjoy the petting zoo, fishing game, gem mine and fun with clowns Dapper and Glitter Dot.

Love of labor
Did you know that Pennsylvania celebrated Labor Day years before it became a national holiday in 1894? Leave it to the good folks of the Keystone State to know that common working folks deserve a long weekend off.
Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation also says “good job” with the annual Labor United Celebration, set for Sunday and Monday in Northmoreland Park in Allegheny Township.
There’s all sorts of good old-fashioned fun to be had, including a midway, food, entertainment, bingo, arts and crafts, flea market, horse-drawn trolley rides, a bird show and the Zerbini Family Circus.

Make something
Indulge your creative impulses from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the free “Community Day: Makerspace Museum” event in The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg.
Have you ever wanted to work with glass? Representatives of Pittsburgh Glass Center will be on hand. Want to get in on the upcycling trend? Work with reclaimed materials at Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse’s “Reuse-a-Palooza.”
Other interactive exhibits and activities also are planned. And if you like your creativity in edible form, try a made-to-order treat from Dahntan Donuts.
