Kiski Township police charged a 90-year-old man with aggravated assault and making terroristic threats after, they say, he pulled a gun on a social worker who was checking on a report that the man was neglecting his wife, who requires in-home hospice care.
Kay Leland Dunmire, of Ridge Road, Kiski Township, was charged with felony aggravated assault and four lesser counts of making terroristic threats. He also was charged with three counts of recklessly endangering another person in connection with the Dec. 3 incident.
Police were called to Dunmire’s home after an employee of Armstrong County Area Agency on Aging said he went to check on the man’s wife and Dunmire pulled a pistol out of an end table, pointed it at him and threatened to shoot if he didn’t leave the residence, according to a criminal complaint.
Police said a nurse and Dunmire’s niece also were in the home when the incident occurred.
An officer found Dunmire in the living room and ordered him to show his hands and tell him where the gun was located. Police found a loaded Springfield 1911 Series 9mm in a drawer, according to the complaint.
The officer secured the gun and placed Dumire in a wheelchair. But while they were interviewing witnesses, police said, he barricaded himself in a bedroom and told police he had a shotgun.
After police spent several minutes trying to get Dunmire to surrender, he opened the door and began kicking at the officer, striking him in the legs and groin, the complaint said.
Police were able to subdue Dunmire and handcuff him to a wheelchair so they could take him into custody, according to the complaint.
A shotgun and a rifle were confiscated from the room, police said.
Dunmire was released on $50,000 unsecured bond. He faces a Jan. 5 preliminary hearing on the charges before District Judge James Andring.
