An ABC Transit Inc. school bus leaves their Etna facility on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

Highlands School District’s new bus contractor has scheduled a dinner to try to attract drivers away from W.L. Roenigk, the district’s outgoing transportation company.

ABC Transit is inviting all of the district’s current bus and van drivers and monitors to the buffet dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. June 12 in the Highlands High School cafeteria in Harrison. A meeting will follow.

According to a district notice, ABC Transit owner Aaron Silverman and staff members will provide an overview of employment opportunities for Highlands’ bus drivers, van drivers and monitors and answer questions.

Highlands School Board voted May 13 to award a five-year student transportation contract to ABC Transit, replacing W.L. Roenigk.

ABC officials have previously said the company will offer signing bonuses for Roenigk drivers who sign up to drive for their company — $1,000 for passenger-endorsed drivers and those with CDL licenses, $500 for van drivers and $250 for monitors.

Roenigk drivers that choose to work for ABC will be able to keep their same routes in Highlands, ABC officials have said.

ABC Transit is working to set up its operations for the start of the 2019-2020 Highlands School year on Aug. 29. In addition to seeking drivers, the company has said it is looking to buy property in Highlands School District for a garage and get buses and vans to use on district routes.

Those with questions or wanting more information are asked to call 412-828-9000.
