The man accused in a fatal Arnold shooting last month already was on the run from police before he became a murder suspect.

Court records show Allen Duwayne Herring, 32, of Braddock was wanted for failing to appear in Westmoreland County Court in February to face drug possession charges filed by Jeannette police.

Herring had been scheduled to appear in pleas court on the charges, filed in January, but never showed up. On Tuesday, Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio scheduled a bench hearing on an additional charge of failing to appear.

Herring is charged with homicide and robbery in the June 28 death of Gregory Ray Wynkoop, 35, of East Franklin. Police said Herring shot Wynkoop during a robbery in an alley.

Herring was arrested Monday after a search found him hiding in a wooded area near the Lower Burrell-New Kensington border. Court records in the murder case have been ordered sealed at least until a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 19. Herring is being held in jail without bond pending that hearing.

Court records show Herring is no stranger to fleeing from police.

In 2011, Herring and another man were charged by Jeannette and Greensburg police with assaulting a man and stealing a check worth $1,600 from him. They also were charged with stealing a 60-inch television from a Greensburg residence.

Records show Herring tried to flee when police closed in and was injured during a chase. He was flown by helicopter to UPMC Mercy for treatment but checked himself out of the hospital wearing a hospital gown and made it to a South Greensburg hotel, where police found and arrested him the same night.

He was convicted in 2012 of theft and escape and was sentenced to serve two to four years in prison.

A state corrections official said he entered state prison in February 2012 and was paroled in September 2013 but was returned to state prison for violating parole rules. He eventually was released in April 2017.
