Aldi announces closing, opening dates for Lower Burrell, New Kensington stores
Aldi’s new store in New Kensington is slated to open March 23, a spokesperson for the company said Wednesday.
The opening of the newly built store in Riverview Plaza on Tarentum Bridge Road will be preceded by the closing of the nearby store in Lower Burrell, scheduled for two days earlier on March 21, the spokesperson said.
A grand opening ceremony for the new store will be held, and more details on the opening timing and ceremony will become available as the date approaches, the spokesperson said.
The new Aldi was built on the site of a former Kmart, which closed in January 2019 after nearly 55 years and was demolished in 2021.
At just under 21,000 square feet, the new Aldi is a fraction of the size of Kmart, which had been about 90,000 square feet. Parking spaces now cover part of the Kmart building’s former footprint.
Aldi confirmed in April 2022 that the Lower Burrell store would be closed in favor of the new building in New Kensington.
The Lower Burrell Aldi was built about 15 years ago as part of an addition to Crossroads Plaza, part of which was later demolished to make way for Sheetz at Leechburg and Craigdell roads.
Aldi opened its first store in the Pittsburgh area in Butler in 1995.
The discount grocer has 2,285 locations in the United States with 149 in Pennsylvania.
