Alleys and patchwork repairs to be focus of Aspinwall paving program this summer

Aspinwall’s paving program will focus on alleys and patchwork repairs this year.

Council unanimously voted June 14 to award its paving program to Oakmont-based A. Folino Construction, which was the lowest of three bidders at $57,414.

“We’ve used them before. They’re really good,” said council Vice President Lara Voyko, chair of infrastructure.

Work to be done includes:

• Alley I;

• a patch along the 200 block of Second Street;

• a patch at the intersection of Second Street and Virginia Avenue;

• a patch in front of 400 Eastern Avenue;

• three patches on Center Avenue, from Sixth to Eighth streets;

• the intersection of Center Avenue and 10th Street;

• Center Avenue between Ninth Street and Alley H.

The borough budgeted $75,000 for paving this year. It may use the estimated $17,500 remaining after the contract to do some brick repairs.

Voyko said council, public works crews, administration and engineer Dan Martone evaluate borough roads each year to determine what paving needs to be done.

“The most dire ones we select, and then if we have money left over, we fix additional ones,” she said. “We have to be careful about where we use our money. The ones we don’t get on the list will go on next year.

“We’ve paved almost all the streets, so we’re able to get to the alleys and patches where we need to.”

A construction start and completion date have yet to be set, Borough Manager Melissa O’Malley said.

In other news

Police Chief David Nemec urged motorists to have patience with slow traffic along Freeport Road.

He said officers will be stationed at various intersections to help with traffic as construction continues along the Route 28 ramps.

Police have been subjected to travelers yelling, screaming and being disorderly while driving, the chief said.

Motorists should allow extra time while driving through the borough and be aware of their surroundings.

• Councilwoman Marcia Cooper announced Firemen’s Memorial Park will soon be getting new playground equipment.

The current playground setup will be taken down within the next few weeks and a new playground is expected to be ready in the fall. No further details were announced.

• Garbage collection the week of July 4 will be delayed one day due to the holiday.
