Subway crash

An Arnold man who police claim crashed a car into a New Kensington Subway last month is facing several traffic citations, but no criminal charges, according to court records.

New Kensington police cited Brandon Tyaire Jackson, 22, with reckless driving, failing to drive at a safe speed, failing to report an accident to police, and property damage, court records show.

He was charged via summons on Dec. 28.

Just before 1 a.m. on Dec. 20, Jackson crashed a car into the Subway at 490 Stevenson Blvd. He was driving a car owned by his girlfriend’s mother, said police Chief Bob Deringer.

“We had a witness come forward who said that they witnessed him driving that vehicle for almost a month prior to the accident. The vehicle was never reported stolen,” Deringer said Wednesday.

Deringer said at the time of the crash that, based on surveillance footage, it appeared Jackson had been traveling at a high rate of speed along Stevenson Boulevard when he abruptly turned onto Baldrick Street, a dead end that runs next to Subway.

He said Jackson went past the Subway and turned around after realizing Baldrick was a dead end. The car picked up speed as it went back down Baldrick and hit a curb. The car flipped on its roof, slid across the parking lot and crashed into the building.

Footage shows Jackson trying to flip the car back over before fleeing the scene. The Subway was closed at the time and no one was injured.

Deringer said officers who are familiar with Jackson identified him through surveillance video. He said the car’s owner also gave police Jackson’s name.

Jackson couldn’t be reached for comment.

Deringer told the Tribune-Review in December that the front of the building was heavily damaged, but remains structurally sound. He also said the neighboring Avis car rental business that is connected to Subway was not damaged.

Jay Lombardo, who owns the building the Subway is in, said Wednesday that the restaurant will eventually re-open. He didn’t have a specific time frame, but hopes it will be within the next couple of months.
