Aspinwall, O'Hara police investigating thefts from unlocked vehicles
O’Hara and Aspinwall police are investigating recent thefts from unlocked vehicles.
Officials from both communities posted reminders on their social media pages for people to lock their car doors and store valuables out of sight.
Township leaders said the latest thefts from vehicles took place sometime between Aug. 13-14.
Aspinwall Police Chief David Nemec said this department received two such reports on Aug. 17.
“We had a few cars that were entered,” Nemec said. “They weren’t actually broken into. Most of the time they’re looking for change. They open a car door, rifle through it, go through papers, different stuff like that.”
There were no reports of damaged vehicles or suspect descriptions from either town.
Nemec said the incidents have been random with no particular part of Aspinwall being targeted.
Residents and travelers are reminded double check their vehicles to make sure they are locked.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity should call 911.
Nemec suggested people who may have become victims or witnesses reach out to police right away instead of turning to social media or waiting to contact the borough office.
“We’re not the Facebook police,” he said. “You need to get us in there right away. If you see something call the police.”
The police departments issued a similar warning a few weeks ago when vehicle break-ins were reported in Pittsburgh.
A message left with O’Hara police Aug. 18 was not returned.
