Banners honoring veterans going up in Harrison
Banners honoring Harrison’s veterans were going up along Freeport Road on Monday.
The banners were sold to raise money for the restoration of the township’s World War II Honor Roll memorial. They recognize all veterans, living and dead, who served at any time.
A total of 151 were available. The first batch of 80 of the 106 sold so far will be placed along Freeport Road and River Avenue, said Bill Rudolph, a member of the memorial’s restoration committee.
Harrison public works crews were putting the banners up. Their installation had been delayed by the covid-19 pandemic, Rudolph said.
The department had been shut down in March after a family member of an employee had tested positive for the disease.
Rudolph’s brother, Air Force veteran Harry Rudolph, is on one of the banners. He died in 2003.
Also featured on a banner is Army veteran Clayton Falkner, who Rudolph said lobbied the township to restore the crumbling Honor Roll memorial at Freeport and Springhill roads.
Two banners feature married couples because both spouses served, Rudolph said.
“We’re glad to finally get started putting them up,” Rudolph said. “The virus is holding everything up.”
