An O’Hara man died Thursday morning after he was struck by two vans while riding his bike along Freeport Road in Harmar, officials said.

Thomas Haykin, 57, was pronounced dead at 6:23 a.m. shortly after the incident, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Haykin was riding his bike in the right lane of Freeport Road heading toward Cheswick in the 2500 block, across from the Valley Motel and Crosspoint Church, when he was struck by the mirror of a Dodge van, Harmar police said.

Haykin lost control of his bike and fell into the roadway, then was struck by a second van traveling in the same lane, police said.

Harmar police Chief Jason Domaratz said it was “just getting light” when the first van driver started to drive past in the left lane. The van’s driver told police he “didn’t see the man on a bicycle.”

The second van’s driver told police that “he didn’t see the victim until it was too late” to stop, Domaratz said.

Both drivers stayed at the site and cooperated with police.

Allegheny County Police are investigating.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the county’s tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
