Brackenridge Salvation Army sets $95,000 Red Kettle goal to support programs
The Brackenridge Salvation Army is kicking off its Red Kettle Campaign Saturday, a week earlier than the agency’s national start.
Captain Selah Bender said she is trying to make up for several bell-ringing locations lost in the Alle-Kiski Valley over the past couple of years.
“Big Lots closed in Heights Plaza, and now Community Market is gone,” Bender said. “We’ve had Penny’s gone for awhile and the Mills mall, well, it’s not great for us so every kettle out there matters more.”
The Allegheny Valley Corps along Brackenridge Avenue has a goal of $95,000 this year to support programs for families of all ages.
In addition to a food bank and community lunch on Thursdays, the local Salvation Army runs a basketball league, volleyball league and weekly fitness workouts. There are Bible studies, worship services and holiday toy giveaways to help those in need.
“I think most of the branches have started kettles a little bit early this year,” Bender said.
“It’s our one major fundraiser that pays for services and programs for the entire year.”
The group is seeking bell ringers for two-hour shifts. There are limited positions that pay $12 an hour, but most of the schedule is filled by volunteers.
Kettles are outside Walmart in Harrison and at Pittsburgh Mills, Sam’s Club at Pittsburgh Mills, Giant Eagle Express in Harmar and Giant Eagle at The Waterworks.
The campaign runs through Dec. 24.
