Buffalo Township approves budget with no tax increase

Buffalo Township residents won’t be paying more in taxes in 2021 after the township adopted a new budget.

“There was no tax increase, just the usual expenses,” Secretary Treasurer Janice Zubrin said. “We have a balanced budget.”

The final budget for the new year amounts to $2.6 million — an increase of about $100,000 over last year’s budget, according to Zubrin. The tax rate will remain at 5.5 mills.

Police spending is among the township’s largest expenses, Zubrin said. Buffalo Township has its own full-time police department.

Another top expenditure is road maintenance.

The ongoing covid-19 pandemic didn’t have any impact on this year’s budget, Zubrin said, but it’s possible the pandemic’s effects could reach into future budget considerations.

“If anything, it might affect next year’s budget,” she said.

Buffalo Township’s most recent tax hike was in 2019, when a 26% real estate tax hike raised taxes from 4.38 mills to 5.5 mills — an increase of 1.12 mills. Last year’s budget included no tax increase.

The 2021 budget will be posted on the Buffalo Township website soon, Zubrin said.
