Hayley Lorent’s goal when she started in cosmetology as a 15-year-old was to own her own business one day.
A decade later, at age 25, Lorent has opened Velvet Shears at 2948 Leechburg Road in Lower Burrell.
“I like that it’s Leechburg Road-facing,” said Lorent, of West Leechburg. “It was a good starter. It’s small, and it’s a good starting store.”
Velvet Shears, which opened last month, offers hair services and facial waxes, although Lorent would like to expand offerings.
“(Customers) love that it is small, and it’s quiet,” Lorent said. “They think it’s cute. There’s been no negative feedback.”
Lorent said she landed on the name Velvet Shears because she wanted a “modern, antique vibe.” Clients also have access to a retro-style coffee bar.
Lorent’s mother, Marie Herman, does hair and is a cosmetology instructor at Forbes Road Career and Technology Center in Monroeville.
Lorent has learned from her mother and also gained knowledge from working in salons in Lower Burrell and Murrysville.
“I’m very ambitious,” Lorent said. “I started as an assistant. I worked at, like, three different salons at one point. I wanted to create an environment people wanted to work in.”
Mayor Chris Fabry is encouraged by Lorent’s entrepreneurship and drive.
“It’s great seeing Hayley take this step forward,” Fabry said. “This is the second business that recently opened by a younger generation of entrepreneurs.
“That is great for the city and its future. I hope more young people continue to invest in our community.”
The second business Fabry referred to is TC Dance Collective at 3012 Leechburg Road, which Tara Crowe opened this summer.
Lorent thanked her husband, Zakory, and her mother for their support in opening the salon.
She said she wants to continue to grow her reputation and business.
“I’m always looking for new clients and feedback,” Lorent said. “I’m open to it all.”
