Cold temperatures Tuesday morning didn’t stop hot drinks and sweet treats from being served up by members of Burrell High School’s unified bocce team.

The team, comprising eight students with special needs and eight regular education students, was selling snacks and drinks at Cora Lee Cupcakes in Feldarelli Square, New Kensington, to raise money for their end-of-season banquet.

It is the fourth year Burrell has fielded a unified bocce team.

“The kids are able to socialize with kids they do not normally socialize with,” said Chelsey Kriley, Life Skills teacher and bocce coach at Burrell. “It allows them to come together and compete.”

Kriley said the sport has improved collaboration and communication among the students.

“You make really good friends,” said student Aaliyah Barker, 16.

Burrell’s first game is at 3 p.m. Thursday at Riverview High School.

People still can donate by sending or dropping off money at Burrell High School and indicate it is for the bocce team, Kriley said.
