Tarentum Council is looking to fill an empty seat.

In an email Tuesday afternoon, Councilwoman Rhonda Dzugan informed the borough she would be resigning from the seven-member council because she is unable to fulfill her duties.

Council will vote to accept her resignation during its meeting starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the borough building.

Dzugan was first appointed to council in February 2016, and then elected in 2017. She represented the borough’s third ward, which consists of West Tarentum.

Dzugan did not attend council’s agenda meeting Tuesday night. Reached for comment later, she said “family issues” were part of why she was stepping down.

“I have a lot going on with my family, family issues,” she said. “I just don’t have the time working 40 hours a week to live up to the duties on council.”

Dzugan had not previously run for or served on council before she was appointed. She said she sought the appointment because she thought she could be an asset to the borough.

“With my time constraints, I’m no longer able to do that,” she said.

Council President Erika Josefoski said the borough will be accepting letters of interest from third-ward residents interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy.

Letters can be dropped off at the borough building or sent to borough Manager Michael Nestico by email at mnestico@tarentumboro.com.

Council has 30 days to fill the vacancy. Council could interview candidates, if necessary, in public at its Feb. 7 meeting, and vote to make an appointment that night.
