Cheswick Community Day returns Sept. 11
Cheswick Community Day is returning after being on hiatus since 2014.
The Cheswick Recreation Board will be hosting the event on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Rachel Carson Riverfront Park.
During the event’s absence, the borough took over the Strawberry Festival in 2013 and last held it in 2019. The festival was canceled last year because of covid.
Carol Hanna, co-chair of the event, said Community Day will be held at a smaller scale to ensure safety for those who attend.
“We were hoping by the time of this event covid would be over, but we are taking precautions during it,” she said.
Masks and hand sanitizer will be available. The event will follow the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s covid guidelines.
A 9/11 tribute will kick off the event with Mayor Daniel Carroll leading a flag ceremony.
Several guests will be speaking or performing during the tribute. Among them will be state Sen. Lindsey Williams, Jim Anderson with Cub Scout Pack 554 and local talent Haley Siler Welsh performing the national anthem.
There will be music, food, children’s activities and interactive games, such as Jenga, Connect Four and cornhole.
The American Pie oldies band will perform from 3-6 p.m. A 50-50 raffle will be held, too.
“I hope people can show and have the opportunity to see their neighbors after not being able to see them for a while,” Hanna said.
