A surprise was in store for a Cheswick councilman during a meeting Tuesday evening.

Councilman Frank Meledandri was awarded the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs President’s Award for his 40 years serving the borough.

The award recognizes individuals who have served in a position for a decade or more. Meledandri’s longtime commitment also was recognized by state Sen. Lindsey Williams and state Rep. Carrie DelRosso.

Recipients are chosen from applications sent in for consideration. Council President Michael Girardi said Cheswick Council nominated Meledandri for the award.

“I was totally surprised. It was unexpected,” Meledandri said. “You don’t expect to get something just for longevity.”

Girardi said Meledandri is a humble person who is invaluable to the council and community. Girardi cited Meledandri’s knowledge and experience.

“He is not the one who likes to toot his own horn or brag about his accomplishments. He deserves to be recognized,” Girardi said.

Borough Secretary Lorraine Zebrine said Meledandri has been an asset to the community.

“He has a plethora of knowledge because he has been around so long,” she said. “He leads the newcomers into the position.”

Meledandri got his start as a councilman in 1982. He has been on every position on council, including serving as president for 20 years. He said he decided to run for council as a write-in candidate in 1981.

He currently oversees the council’s finances and public works department. He also is a part of the Allegheny Valley North Council of Governments.

Reflecting on his tenure, Meledandri said he is most proud of being able to apply his years of business experience to sort out short-term issues and develop and implent long-term plans.

Meledandri said he never thought he would be serving Cheswick for so long, but giving back to his community continues to motivate him.

“I thought it would just be for a short while. After I got on, I realized this is kind of a gift,” he said. “It was an opportunity to give back to the community.”
