The race for Cheswick Council appears to have still come up two people short after Tuesday’s primary election.

Republican incumbents Michael Girardi and Brad Yaksich were the only two running for three open four-year seats and one open two-year seat.

Girardi got the nomination for both the two-year seat and one of the four-year seats. Yaksich got a nomination for one of the four-year seats.

There were 23 write-in votes for a Democratic nominee for the two-year seat and 48 write-in votes for a Democratic nominee for the four-year seat.

Those results won’t be tallied for a couple weeks, and its unclear if they were all for one person or multiple people. A candidate needs at least 10 write-in votes to appear on the November ballot.

That means at least two people would have to run a successful write-in campaign for the November election to have all of the seats filled.

If not, council would have to appoint two people after the election.

Although things could change if there are write-in candidates in November, Girardi said he anticipates selecting the four-year seat instead of the two-year seat.

“I would envision taking the four-year seat,” he said. “Cheswick, in the past, has had successful write-in campaigns. I don’t really want to get ahead myself.”

Girardi said he hopes more people might be inspired to run a write-in campaign for the general election.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to have to fill the vacancies,” he said. “I’d prefer to give the opportunity to the voters.”

Yaksich agreed with Girardi on hoping residents run as write-ins.

“Let the residents vote who they want, not council appoint who they want,” he said. “That’s what the process was set up to be.”

This was Yaksich’s first time running. He was appointed to the board earlier this year to fill a vacancy through the end of the year.

He said he’s concerned about the lack of interest and hopes to get the word out about the vacancies.
