The Cleveland Keys – a dueling piano company – takes requests from the audience and then performs the tune.

Known for doing weddings, corporate functions and nonprofit events, these musicians also do several other appearances, such as the upcoming Dueling Pianos Night at the Oaks Theater in Oakmont.

“Interacting with people in the audience makes it fun,” says Greg Coffey, founder/owner of the Cleveland Keys. “And when you play their favorite song, it makes their day. It’s a special way to connect with the audience. And we love when they sing along with us.”

Including Coffey, there are six people who are part of the core group, specializing in rock and pop. For this event, Coffey will be joined with Andrew Varner on piano and drummer John-John Sparent. They often invite a guest musician to perform with them. For this event it will be Nate Varner on bass.

The group is based in Ohio, but was formed in Nashville, Tenn., where many of the members first performed at the Big Bang Bar there, but now live in other parts of the country. You can find them on stage in Nashville, Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Houston.

The Cleveland Keys have been recognized by The Knot, an online wedding planner, in the best of weddings category the past three years.

Coffey says they are excited to play in the historic theater and they fell in love with Oakmont when they were in town for a previous event.

“We want to engage the audience,” Coffey says. “Very little of what we do is rehearsed. So we don’t know what’s going to happen from start to finish which keeps things interesting. When you put the right people behind two pianos, I truly believe that there is nothing better in the world.”

This type of interactive performance is special, says Peter Stumpf, a piano technician for Carnegie Mellon University who founded Piano Day Pittsburgh, where he brings a piano into the city for anyone to play. He owns Pianoburgh, a business that services pianos throughout the region.

“They are very versatile pianists that work very well off each other,” Stumpf says. “Personally, I love the idea of bringing back the piano front and center in terms of live music.”

It is going to be a really cool show, says Tony Serrao, co-owner of the theater with his dad Marc Serrao and Meg Burkhardt. He says the show will also be a fundraiser to help a good friend, Freddie Armocida of Penn Hills, who is battling cancer. Part of the proceeds from tickets, a 50-50 and basket raffles as well as T-shirt sales will be donated to “Fast Freddie Night.”

“We are so excited to have Cleveland Keys here, because they put on a fun performance,” Tony Serrao says. “The audience will be so involved and will be dancing and singing along. It will be an amazing night.”

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 show are $15.
