New Kensington native Skyy Moore is racking up the accolades.
First, it was winning the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, March 16, 2023 is known as Skyy Moore Day in Westmoreland County. He was given the honor by the county commissioners Thursday.
“I’m just so grateful and blessed,” he said. “Just to be in my situation, to have my support system and just be part of a great county and people that believe in me.”
The 22-year-old wide receiver was joined by numerous family members at the Westmoreland County courthouse and posed with the commissioners for a photograph.
The Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Moore is a 2019 graduate of Shady Side Academy, where he was a quarterback and cornerback. He went on to play at Western Michigan University, where he became a wide receiver. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022.
Moore was wide open when he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a third-down play in the fourth quarter.
“How long did the ball take to get to you?” Controller Jeff Balzer asked while snagging an autograph from Moore.
“Forever,” Moore replied, laughing.
Timika Hastie said watching her son play — and score his first touchdown — during the Super Bowl was emotional.
“The kids love him, everywhere he goes, it makes me cry just to see that kids are so excited to meet him,” she said. “It really is a good thing coming from New Kensington, you would never imagine that these kids would have such a big role model from someone that’s just like them.”
Those kids will have an opportunity on Friday to see Moore during a parade that will start at 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th Street and Fifth Avenue in New Kensington. The parade will make its way down Fifth Avenue to Eighth Street, turn onto Fourth Avenue and head back to 10th Street.
Moore said it has been great to get the love and support from back home during his first year chasing his dream in the NFL. It’s been a lot of pressure, but he’s just getting started.
“It doesn’t stop, my career’s not over, we have to keep going and do it again,” he said.
