Empty food sections are pictured during the first day of the going-out-of-business clearance sale at Community Supermarket in Harrison on Friday, Oct. 10.

Community Supermarket in Harrison will likely close its doors Wednesday, about two weeks ahead of schedule.

“I was in there today, and we don’t have much left,” General Manager George Sears said.

“We’re not 100% sure it will be Wednesday, but it looks like it.”

Shoppers who want to peruse the Heights Plaza store for sales or bid farewell to longtime employees should plan to be there by 3 p.m.

Sears said hours were cut this week.

A storewide sale started Friday. By Sunday, prices were slashed by 50%, leaving little on the shelves, he said.

Community Supermarket has operated in Heights Plaza since 2002 and is the township’s only independently owned grocery store.

Plaza owner Benbrooke Development said previously it would seek another market to fill the vacancy, but the company did not return calls Tuesday.

It is unclear what Benbrooke has planned for the property since the entire plaza is listed for sale for $16 million.

Of the store’s nearly 30 employees, about half have accepted a job transfer to one of the company’s locations in Lower Burrell, Penn Hills or Bloomfield, or the company-owned Giant Eagle in Verona.
