Construction of Springdale turf field to begin this week
Springdale Jr.-Sr. High School’s new multipurpose turf field will enter the first stages of its construction this week, according to Allegheny Valley Public Relations Director Jan Zastawniak.
Located along Butler Road, across from the school, the field will host the district’s football, soccer and track and field teams starting in the 2025-26 school year. The board approved the $2.8 million-project in March.
FieldTurf USA Inc., the project’s contractor, will begin dropping off equipment at the site in the coming days before starting to move dirt next week, Zastawniak said.
Earth moving and the installation of the new synthetic field surface, she said, will be complete by the end of August, concurrent with the start of the school year.
A timeline for the completion of the field’s new track surface is uncertain, but Zastawniak said it would be ready for next spring’s track and field season.
The facility will also receive a new scoreboard and LED lights, which will be installed by September, she said.
The Springdale Dynamos had played home football games at Veterans Memorial Field on Lincoln Avenue for 84 years before lease discussions between the district and Springdale fell through.
That resulted in the Dynamos playing “home” games in nearby districts including Burrell and Freeport.
“The goal was to let them play football home games at home,” board President Nino Pollino said.
Pollino said he is “definitely happy” with proceedings so far, and the board would “evaluate options” for further improvements to the area.
Those improvements could include things like permanent bleachers or additional nearby parking, but the board has not formally approved any project expansions yet.
