A new business is set to open at The Waterworks.

A Dollar Tree will open in May in the former Famous Footwear space, joining 15 other Dollar Tree locations in the Pittsburgh area.

A contractor working April 28 inside the store said renovations are progressing and the work is expected to be completed in about two weeks.

Dollar Tree did not respond to a request for comment.

Work on the space began in March and includes new walls, doors and finishes, masonry repairs and new structural columns, according to an Allegheny County permit posted on the entrance door.

The discount chain sells a variety of goods — such as party items, office supplies, beauty and personal hygiene products, groceries, housewares, cleaning products, toys and more — at prices ranging from $1.50 to $7.

A social media post announcing the news of the new Dollar Tree garnered mostly positive comments and a few less-than-enthusiastic ones on the private Facebook group of Aspinwall Community Page.

“Excited about this — Dollar Tree is great! Especially if you need craft supplies or birthday decorations,” wrote one person.

“Definitely not what is needed,” wrote another member.

“There goes the neighborhood. Waterworks is going to be the hood now,” wrote another.

“Kinda happy about this,” someone posted.

According to a March 16 news release from Dollar Tree, the chain opened 402 Dollar Tree stores in fiscal 2025 and expects to open 400 stores this year while closing 75 stores.

Dollar Tree, headquartered in Chesapeake, Va., employs about 150,000 associates. It operates more than 9,200 stores and 18 distribution centers in 48 states and seven Canadian provinces.

Dollar Tree did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.
