A new Dollar Tree in New Kensington will open in late July, a company spokesperson said.
The store is in Riverview Plaza on Tarentum Bridge Road, in the space previously occupied by Altmeyer’s. A specific opening date was not provided.
Altmeyer’s filed for bankruptcy in July 2022 and ran a liquidation sale late last year at its New Kensington, Greensburg, Uniontown and West Mifflin locations.
Altmeyer’s specialized in home goods such as bedding, bath and kitchenwares, as well as window treatments. George Altmeyer founded it in April 1941, selling dry goods from the basement of Corbin’s Bar and Grill on 10th Street in New Kensington.
Dollar Tree currently has nine stores within 10 miles of New Kensington. None of them will be impacted by the new store opening, the company spokesperson said.
When Aldi opened a newly built store in Riverview Plaza in March, it closed a nearby store in Lower Burrell.
Dollar Tree is accepting employment applications for the new store, but the company spokesperson did not provide details on how people could apply to work there. A section of the company’s website at corporate.dollartree.com is devoted to hiring.
“We look forward to serving the local community,” the spokesperson said.
The discount retail chain previously was known for everything in its stores costing $1. In November 2021, Dollar Tree announced it was increasing prices for the majority of its products to $1.25 because of the rising cost of goods and freight.
