East Deer officials are looking forward to their next phase of renovating the recreation facilities in East Deer Memorial Park.
East Deer Commissioners Chairman Tony Taliani said the township was approved for a $50,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Greenway Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP).
The project will not involve major construction and will consist mostly of equipment upgrades to playgrounds, he said.
The GTRP grant will cover phase two of the project, which includes installation of a freestanding climber with a fall zone; a swing set with a fall zone; a basketball hoop, rim and pole; new hockey goals; and crack sealing of the tennis courts. Pitsch said the legs and poles of the swings are in good condition, but the seats and chains are worn out.
“We felt there was a need for some improvement and safety considerations with the fall zone,” Taliani said. “We want to improve recreation opportunities in our community.”
Township engineer Matt Pitsch said bids are being accepted through June 29. He said officials hope to start work as soon as possible once the bid is finalized.
The project will cost $60,000 for the township, Pitsch said.
The first phase of the project was done a few years ago to resurface and paint the courts, and to upgrade the concession stand and pavilion, he said.
Pitsch said the township is looking to include another phase to add a small stage or band stage. He said it had to be cut from the original plan because of the level of funding received.
The phase two renovations will be done in the recreation areas at 700 Front St. and Parsonage Street and the walking trail at 800 Grant St.
“This is just part of our continued effort to improve educational recreational opportunities for residents,” Taliani said.
