East Deer is getting festive early this holiday season.
The township’s third annual Light Up Night is scheduled for Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. in Memorial Park, said East Deer Secretary Chrystal Carmen.
Crafts will be available for children at the event, as well as a letters to Santa writing station.
Starting at 6 p.m., the big man himself will start making his way toward the park to meet with children at the event. Kids will have the chance to meet Santa and grab a goodie bag from him as well. At around 6:15 p.m., Santa will host the tree lighting, Carmen said.
The event will also give a nod to the township’s Small Business Saturday events by featuring local vendors. Carmen said food vendors will also be on-site.
The township is still taking applications for interested vendors.
“If more want to come, they’re more than welcome,” Carmen said.
The recreation board will also be selling hot chocolate, hot cider and smores at the park’s concession stand. Proceeds will go toward future projects and events.
Santa used to ride on the township’s fire truck from street to street on a Saturday morning around the beginning of December, Carmen said.
Township officials began the Light Up Night tradition three years ago after they realized a lot of children weren’t able to see Santa’s trek because of sports and other activities.
The new event has been a hit, Carmen said. She’s been able to watch popularity of the event grow over the years.
“It’s going great,” Carmen said. “All the little kids come to the field. If it’s not too cold, they’ll play on the field…It’s definitely gaining popularity.”
In addition to the family friendly fun, people are able to sign up for the East Deer house decorating contest. A judge will be visiting the homes about a week after Light Up Night, Carmen said.
“We all get to decorate early this year,” Carmen said.
A winner will be announced for the ongoing raffle competition for a 65-inch television and soundbar. Tickets are $10 each and will be sold by the recreation board and at the township building until Nov. 29. Proceeds will go to future recreation board activities and events.
Light Up Night is free to attend and will last until 8 p.m.
