Four people were injured Sunday after a two-car crash and short foot chase in East Deer.

Officials said it appeared a man driving a red pickup truck crossed the center line in the 500 block of Freeport Road and crashed into a silver SUV just before 3 p.m.

He then fled on foot.

East Deer officer Dalton Vanwhy said he and another officer chased the man through Marion Street and up a steep hillside into the woods below Route 28 and caught him within five minutes.

Vanwhy said the man told them he fled because he had warrants out for his arrest.

“He was severely injured because of the crash, and he was high on narcotics,” Vanwhy said.

Vanwhy said there was drug paraphernalia in the truck.

The man was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Police didn’t release his name Sunday because the crash was still under investigation.

The three people in the SUV, grandparents and their adolescent grandson, were transported to UPMC Presbyterian hospital with injuries, East Deer fire Chief Jack Bailie said.

The accident closed one lane of Freeport Road for about an hour. Traffic was directed by police and firefighters.

Carla Gould, who lives on Marion Street, said her young daughters were out playing when the man was apprehended by police.

“It’s crazy,” she said. “My kids were up in the woods (where he ran).”

Gould said the situation is troubling because so many children live on the street. She didn’t recognize the man.

“I saw him, but I don’t know him,” she said.

Vern Parkhill said he saw the man getting walked down out of the woods. He rents a garage in the area where the man was caught.

“I just worry about the guy he hit,” Parkhill said.
