East Deer's summer celebration set for Memorial Field
Food, games and live music are just some of the attractions available when East Deer celebrates summer on Saturday, Aug. 19.
The township’s summer celebration will hit East Deer Memorial Field from noon to 8 p.m.
“It’s grown into a very good festival for our community,” said township Commissioner Tony Taliani.
According to Township Secretary Chrystal Carmen, the festival will feature kids activities, craft and food vendors, live music and a cornhole tournament.
From noon to 1:30 p.m., Stagger Lee will provide live music. Rick and Tony will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. Wise Guys will take the stage from 6 to 8 p.m.
People can get airbrush tattoos by Dragon Guy from 1 to 2 p.m. Balloon creations by “Weird Eric” will be available from 2 to 5 p.m. A western martial arts demonstration by Broken Plow will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. A free foam party is from 2 to 4 p.m. A car cruise begins at 2 p.m.
Other events, Carmen said, include a K-9 narcotics presentation from the Allegheny Valley Regional Police Department from 1:30 to 2 p.m., and pony rides from 3 to 6 p.m.
Registration for the cornhole tournament begins at 1 p.m., the competition begins at 2 p.m. Registration costs are $50 per team, and there are cash prizes for the top three places.
Food vendors include Father Miro, Ron Esser and Starlite Lounge, Fat Cats Subs and the famous chicken from Rural Ridge Fire Department.
Events free to children include an obstacle course, foam party, airbrush tattoos, balloon art and pony rides, Carmen said.
Other games are 50 cents a try.
There will be other activities sponsored by Deer Lakes High School’s band, and the Deer Lakes Youth Baseball Association, softball and football teams.
Taliani said the township’s goals in hosting the festival are to make it affordable, family-friendly and an opportunity for vendors to sell their wares. In the past couple of years the township’s held the festival, he believes that goal has been met.
“It’s going to be a great day for the people of our community and anyone who visits,” he said.
